Why the Question Has No Single Answer
The paper carries two hundred and seventy marks across ninety questions, and it is natural to want a target number out of that total. The difficulty is that whether any given score is good depends on things you cannot know in advance: how many vacancies exist this cycle, how many candidates applied, how your category and state's competition shakes out, and how difficult your shift was relative to others once normalisation is applied.
That makes a fixed target unreliable as a planning tool. What is far more useful, and entirely within your control, is the performance profile behind a strong score — the combination of attempts and accuracy in each session that produces a competitive result regardless of where the line eventually falls. That profile is what this guide describes.
There is a further reason not to anchor on a number. Published cutoffs are expressed in normalised scores while your practice score is raw, and the two are not on the same scale, so a mock total matching last cycle's cutoff proves nothing. First, Know Which Marks Actually Count
Before any target can mean anything, one structural fact has to be settled, and most candidates have it wrong. The paper is worth two hundred and seventy marks, but that is not the score you are ranked on. Session I is qualifying in nature — its one hundred and twenty marks decide only whether your Session II sheet is evaluated, and are never added to your merit position.
The qualifying threshold has been thirty per cent for UR and EWS candidates, twenty-five per cent for OBC, and twenty per cent for SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-servicemen. Clear it and you proceed; clear it by a wide margin and you gain nothing extra. Your merit is then drawn on normalised Session II marks out of one hundred and fifty.
So a good SSC MTS score is really two separate things rather than one number. It is comfortable qualification in Session I, which is a low bar treated as a pass-or-fail event, and it is as high a Session II score as you can produce, which is where every mark that decides your rank comes from. The Arithmetic of Attempts and Accuracy
Your score is produced by two variables interacting, and understanding how they interact is worth more than any target. Every question carries three marks. In Session I there is no deduction, so your score is simply three times the number you get right, and attempts cost nothing. In Session II each wrong answer costs one, so your score is three times your correct answers minus your wrong ones.
The consequence is that attempts and accuracy have completely different values in the two halves. In Session I, attempts are free and accuracy is the only variable that matters — you should attempt all forty regardless. In Session II, attempts carry a cost, and a candidate attempting forty questions at sixty per cent accuracy can finish behind a candidate attempting thirty at eighty per cent. That is the calculation most candidates never actually run.
- Session I: attempt all forty. There is no configuration where leaving a blank helps you.
- Session II at high accuracy: attempts are strongly worth adding, since each correct answer adds three.
- Session II at low accuracy: additional attempts can be net negative, and restraint outscores volume.
- The break-even point for a blind four-option guess in Session II is exactly zero, so a guess with no elimination adds nothing but variance.
- Every eliminated option shifts a Session II guess further into positive territory.
This is why two candidates who both report attempting seventy-five questions can finish far apart. One took their risks in the free session and stayed disciplined in the penalised one; the other did the reverse. The full logic is in the negative marking strategy.
What a Strong Performance Profile Looks Like
Rather than a target score, aim for a profile. In Session I, all forty questions attempted, with reasoning close to fully correct and arithmetic accuracy as high as your speed allows. Reasoning is the section where a prepared candidate should be scoring near the top of their range, because the question families are stable and shallow, so weakness there is almost always an exposure problem rather than an ability one.
In Session II, a high proportion of confident answers, a moderate number of eliminated guesses, and very few pure guesses. General Awareness should be fast and decisive, since a fact is recalled in seconds or not at all, and English should be attempted broadly on the grammar and vocabulary items with the comprehension passage taken last. Crucially, both sessions should be finished — unreached questions are the largest single avoidable loss on the paper.
The consistency of that profile matters more than any single strong result. A candidate whose scores swing widely across attempts is not reliably anywhere, whatever their best paper looked like. Where Most Scores Leak
Across candidates, the same handful of leaks account for most of the gap between a mediocre score and a strong one, and none of them is a knowledge problem. The largest is unreached questions caused by poor time allocation, usually a single arithmetic topic quietly consuming minutes that belonged elsewhere. The second is Session I blanks, which are free marks declined for no reason. The third is undisciplined Session II guessing, which converts effort into deductions.
What is striking about all three is that fixing them requires no additional syllabus. A candidate who plugs those leaks scores materially higher with exactly the same knowledge they already had, which is why full-paper practice with honest review outperforms additional reading for most aspirants in the final stretch.
The fourth leak is subtler and shows up in review rather than during the attempt: questions answered wrongly that the candidate genuinely knew, lost to misreading under pressure. These are usually the cheapest to fix, because the remedy is a two-second pause before selecting rather than any study at all.
Why a Higher Score Is Worth More Than Selection
Most candidates frame the goal as clearing the cutoff, which quietly caps their ambition at the line. That framing understates what the score does. Your position in the merit list influences which post and which department you are allocated, and those allocations shape the job you will actually do for years — whether you land in a busy headquarters or a quiet field office, in a department whose work interests you or one that does not.

There is also a margin argument. Aiming exactly at the line leaves nothing for a harder shift, a nervous morning, or a cycle with fewer vacancies than expected — all of which are outside your control and any of which can move the outcome. A candidate aiming clearly above the band absorbs those shocks; a candidate aiming at the band does not.
How to Track Your Own Score Honestly
Stop recording only totals. A total compresses everything useful out of the attempt, and it is the number least responsive to changes in how you prepare. Record instead the four figures that actually diagnose a paper: attempts and accuracy in each session, separately.
Those four numbers tell you immediately what to do next. Low Session I attempts means a time problem. Low Session I accuracy with full attempts means a knowledge or speed problem in a specific topic. High Session II attempts with low accuracy means guessing discipline. Low Session II attempts with high accuracy means you are leaving marks behind and could afford to attempt more. No total tells you any of that.
Track those four across every full paper and watch the trend rather than the individual result. Improvement in this exam is rarely dramatic between consecutive papers, but it is clearly visible across five or six when you are measuring the right things.
