Why Reasoning Is the Best-Value Section on the Paper

Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving carries twenty questions worth sixty marks in Session I, and it is the section where a well-prepared candidate should be scoring closest to full marks. The reason is structural rather than motivational. The question families SSC uses in MTS are few, stable across cycles, and shallow in difficulty, which means the section rewards recognition rather than reasoning ability in any deep sense. Recognition is built by exposure, and exposure is available to anyone willing to put in volume.

This distinguishes reasoning sharply from arithmetic, where speed is limited by how fast you can compute, and from General Awareness, where speed is limited by what you happen to have retained. In reasoning, a candidate who has worked through several hundred questions of each family answers most items in well under a minute, because they are not solving a fresh problem — they are matching a pattern they have met dozens of times before. That is a very different cognitive task, and it is much faster.

The strategic consequence is that reasoning should be attempted first within Session I, banking a large share of the session's marks while concentration is highest and the clock is not yet a threat. Opening with arithmetic and hitting two slow questions early can leave forty per cent of the session's marks untouched with twenty minutes remaining, which converts an easy section into a scramble. The Families That Actually Appear

The official syllabus for this section reads broadly, covering similarities and differences, space visualisation, problem solving, analysis and judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, figure classification and various series. What actually appears across past shifts is a much shorter and more concrete list, and knowing it is worth more than reading the syllabus a dozen times.

  • Analogies — very heavily present. SSC favours a small set of relationships: worker to workplace, tool to user, product to raw material, part to whole, animal to young.
  • Classification and odd-one-out — the same logic in reverse, testing whether you can identify the shared property.
  • Coding and decoding — rotating through letter shifting, position numbering, reversal and simple substitution.
  • Number and alphabet series — arithmetic progressions, squares and cubes, alternating operations, letter-position patterns.
  • Blood relations — structurally identical every time; only the names change.
  • Direction and distance — same, with only the turns varying.
  • Order, ranking and arrangement — straightforward positional logic rather than elaborate constraint puzzles.
  • Venn diagrams and basic syllogism — present but usually simple.
  • Non-verbal: mirror and water images, embedded figures, paper folding and cutting, figure completion.

Equally important is what does not appear. The elaborate seating arrangement puzzles and multi-constraint logical problems that dominate banking papers are effectively absent from SSC MTS, and time spent on them is time taken from families that will actually be tested. Candidates who prepare from generic reasoning material frequently spend weeks on this, and the cost is invisible until the paper arrives and none of it is there. Non-Verbal Is the Underprepared Half

Non-verbal reasoning has a dependable presence in MTS and is consistently the most underprepared part of the section. The reason is not difficulty — mirror images, paper folding and embedded figures each follow a fixed logic that does not vary between papers — but unfamiliarity. Candidates who studied in text-heavy environments find figure-based questions foreign, feel slow at them, and quietly deprioritise them in favour of families that feel more tractable.

This is a mistake with an unusually cheap fix. Because the logic genuinely does not vary, non-verbal questions become fast very quickly with concentrated exposure — often within a couple of weeks of working thirty or forty questions of each type. A candidate who was losing four or five questions here and now answers them in twenty seconds each has gained a meaningful block of marks for a small and finite investment, which is a better return than almost anything else available late in preparation.

The specific types worth drilling separately are mirror and water images, which reverse along different axes and are frequently confused; paper folding and cutting, where the trick is to work backwards from the final state; embedded figures, which reward systematic scanning rather than intuition; and figure series, which follow the same progression logic as number series applied to shapes.

How to Practise for Recognition Rather Than Solving

The method that builds recognition fastest is blocked practice, which runs against the common advice to always practise in mixed sets. Work twenty or thirty questions of a single family in one sitting, deliberately, so the underlying pattern becomes obvious through repetition. Doing twenty analogies consecutively makes SSC's preferred relationship types visible in a way that doing twenty mixed questions never will, because the pattern only emerges across repeated exposure to the same structure.

Once a family feels automatic, move it into mixed timed practice, where the skill being tested is switching between families quickly rather than solving any one of them. Both phases are necessary and they are not interchangeable. Candidates who only ever do mixed practice build competence slowly across everything; candidates who only ever do blocked practice are fast at each family but lose time switching between them under exam conditions.

Track your per-question time rather than only your accuracy in this section, because accuracy alone hides the problem. A candidate answering nineteen of twenty correctly but taking ninety seconds each has consumed the whole session and left arithmetic in ruins. What to Do When a Question Does Not Resolve

Occasionally a reasoning question will not yield — usually a series where the pattern is genuinely obscure, or an analogy where two options both seem defensible. The correct response is the same as in arithmetic: mark an answer, flag it, and move on. Because Session I carries no negative marking in recent cycles, marking something before moving is strictly better than leaving it blank, and a flagged question left unanswered at the end of the session is a guaranteed zero.

Where two options both seem defensible in an analogy or classification question, the tie-breaker that works most often is specificity. SSC tends to prefer the relationship that is more precise rather than the one that is merely true, so an option that shares a narrow, exact relationship with the stem usually beats one that shares a broad category. This will not resolve every case, but it converts a genuine coin flip into a decision with a slight edge.

Beyond that, the honest advice is to spend the saved time elsewhere. A single reasoning question is worth three marks, exactly the same as a percentage question you could answer in forty seconds.
