How to Read the SSC MTS Syllabus
Every official syllabus is written defensively. It lists every topic the examining body might reasonably want to test, which protects it from complaints but tells a candidate almost nothing about where to spend their evenings. The SSC MTS syllabus is no exception: read literally, it appears to cover the whole of school arithmetic, a broad sweep of general knowledge, and the entirety of basic English grammar. Read against past shifts, it collapses into something much smaller and far more manageable.
The organising fact is that MTS is pitched at roughly matriculation level throughout. That ceiling is not a rough guide but a real constraint on what can be asked, and it means the hardest question on the paper is still a Class 10 question. Candidates who prepare as though the exam might suddenly turn difficult waste months on depth that never gets tested, when the marks were sitting in speed on the easy material all along.
The syllabus below is organised by session, because the two halves of the paper are scored by different rules and deserve different preparation. Session I: Numerical and Mathematical Ability
This section carries twenty questions worth sixty marks, and it is the slowest part of the paper per question because every item requires actual working. The official syllabus covers number systems, computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions, and relationships between numbers, along with fundamental arithmetical operations, percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, mensuration, time and distance, and time and work.
Against past shifts, the distribution is heavily uneven. Percentage and its applications, profit and loss layered with discount, ratio and proportion, averages, simple and compound interest, and time-speed-distance together account for the clear majority of what appears. Mensuration shows up in smaller numbers and usually at the level of one formula applied directly. Number systems and simplification appear as quick-scoring items that reward calculation speed rather than insight.
- Number systems, simplification, LCM and HCF — fast marks, worth drilling to reflex speed.
- Percentage, and its use inside other question types — the single most reliably present topic.
- Profit, loss and discount, frequently chaining a markup with a discount in the same question.
- Ratio, proportion and partnership at a straightforward level.
- Average, often with consecutive numbers where writing the sequence beats the formula.
- Simple and compound interest, usually to two or three years.
- Time and work, and time, speed and distance — these tend to rotate rather than both appear in strength.
- Mensuration: areas and perimeters of standard shapes, volumes of cube, cuboid, cylinder.

Session I: Reasoning Ability and Problem Solving
Also twenty questions and sixty marks, and by some distance the highest accuracy-per-minute section on the paper. The syllabus covers non-verbal reasoning including similarities and differences, space visualisation, problem solving, analysis and judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, figure classification, arithmetical number series, and non-verbal series.
What actually appears is a stable and shallow set of question families. Analogies, classification and odd-one-out, coding and decoding, number and alphabet series, blood relations, direction and distance, order and ranking, and a dependable presence of non-verbal items — mirror and water images, embedded figures, paper folding and cutting, and figure completion. The elaborate seating-arrangement puzzles that dominate banking papers are effectively absent from MTS, which is the most useful single thing to know about this section.
Because the families are so stable, reasoning rewards recognition rather than reasoning in any deep sense. A candidate who has worked through several hundred analogies has internalised the relationship types SSC prefers and answers them in seconds. Session II: General Awareness
Twenty-five questions worth seventy-five marks, and the section with the widest gap between apparent and actual scope. The official syllabus speaks of awareness of the environment around us and its application to society, covering current events, matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect, and questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries in history, culture, geography, economic scene, general polity and scientific research.
Past shifts cluster far more narrowly than that suggests. Indian polity and the Constitution, modern Indian history and the freedom struggle, basic physical and Indian geography, economy fundamentals and prominent government schemes, general science at a Class 6 to 10 level, and static one-liners covering awards, sports, books and authors, dances and important days carry the bulk of the section. Current affairs appears but tends to stay within the preceding six to nine months and favours fact-based categories such as appointments, summits, sporting venues and scheme launches over analysis or commentary.
The property that defines this section strategically is that it is binary. You either recall a fact within a few seconds or you do not have it, and time spent staring at a General Awareness question is almost always wasted. That makes it the fastest section on the paper to clear and the one where retention method matters more than reading volume — which is exactly what the general awareness system addresses.
Session II: English Language and Comprehension
Twenty-five questions worth seventy-five marks, testing basic comprehension and understanding of English along with vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms and antonyms, and correct usage. In practice the section resolves into a predictable set: spotting errors, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, spelling correction, one word substitution, idioms and phrases, sentence improvement, and a short reading comprehension passage with several questions attached.
The vocabulary tested is common rather than obscure, which is the most encouraging fact about this section for candidates who did not study in English medium. Steady exposure to ordinary written English beats cramming word lists, because the questions favour words that genuinely circulate rather than exam-only vocabulary. The grammar tested is similarly narrow: subject-verb agreement, tenses, articles and prepositions, and pronoun consistency account for most error-spotting items cycle after cycle. What the Syllabus Does Not Tell You
Two things sit outside the syllabus document and matter as much as anything inside it. The first is that the paper is bilingual, and questions can be switched between English and Hindi during the attempt. Practising in the language you will actually answer in changes your reading speed materially, particularly in General Awareness and comprehension, and it is not a decision to make for the first time on exam day.
The second is that candidates applying for Havaldar posts face a Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standard Test after the written stage. These are qualifying rather than score-bearing, which means they add nothing to your merit position but end your candidature if failed.
