What 250 Actually Requires
Two hundred and fifty out of three hundred means roughly sixty-five correct answers out of seventy-five attempted, with almost no negative marking. Put that way, the shape of the target becomes clear: it is not a knowledge target at all. It is an accuracy target, and it is unreachable by any candidate who is losing fifteen or twenty marks a paper to avoidable errors.
A candidate attempting seventy-five questions with eighty-five percent accuracy scores about 244. The same candidate at seventy-five percent accuracy scores about 206. The difference between those two is not a chapter, a book or a coaching institute. It is ten percentage points of execution across the same three hours.
The Subject Decomposition
A total target is useless until it is broken into subjects, because a total can be reached by many routes and only some of them are realistic for you. Decide the decomposition and then test every mock against it rather than against the total.
- Chemistry: 90 or above. This is the load-bearing element of almost every 250-plus score. It is the fastest subject, the closest to NCERT, and the most reliably converted into marks.
- Physics: 80 to 85. Achievable with Modern Physics and Electrodynamics secured and Mechanics solid.
- Mathematics: 75 to 85. The hardest to make reliable because it is the most time-hungry and the most punishing of small errors.
- Total lost to negatives: under 10 marks across the entire paper.
The Chemistry number does most of the work and is the most commonly under-targeted. Candidates who find Mathematics intellectually satisfying pour hours into it and treat Chemistry as something to top up in December. That is the wrong trade at every score level and it is fatal at this one, because 90 in Chemistry is genuinely attainable in a way that 95 in Mathematics is not.
Chemistry Is Where the Score Is Built
If you are aiming at 250, Chemistry has to become close to automatic, and each of its three halves needs a different treatment to get there. Inorganic is retention work — spaced repetition against NCERT over months, not a reading in October. Organic is mechanism understanding followed by heavy reaction-sequence drilling until conversions are recognised rather than derived. Physical is problem practice, closer in character to Physics than to the rest of the subject.
The speed dividend matters as much as the marks. A candidate who finishes Chemistry in thirty-five minutes rather than fifty has bought fifteen minutes for Mathematics, which is where those minutes are worth the most. Eliminating the Error Classes
At the 200 level, most lost marks are knowledge gaps. At the 250 level, most lost marks are execution. The four classes below account for nearly all of it, and each has a specific fix that has nothing to do with studying more.
- Sign and unit errors: a correct method producing a wrong value. Fix by writing units at every step and checking the sign of the final answer against physical sense before entering it.
- Misreading the question: solving for the wrong quantity, or missing a word like 'not' or 'minimum'. Fix by reading the final sentence twice before starting.
- Rounding and entry errors in Section B: correct value, wrong format. Fix by reading the entered value back from the screen once, every time.
- Selection errors: attempting a question you should have skipped. Fix with a hard abandonment rule, which is the highest-return of the four.
Track these by class in your error log rather than by chapter. A candidate who discovers they lose twelve marks a paper to sign errors has found a twelve-mark improvement that requires no new learning at all — and that discovery only happens if the log records the class of error, not just the topic. Attempt Volume: The Counterintuitive Part
Reaching 250 usually requires attempting close to all seventy-five questions, which means the accuracy has to hold across the whole paper rather than across a comfortable subset. This is what makes the target genuinely demanding: you cannot buy accuracy by attempting less.
But the route there is not to increase attempts and hope accuracy follows. It is the reverse. Build accuracy first at a lower attempt count, then increase the count while holding accuracy constant. A candidate attempting sixty questions at ninety percent should raise attempts gradually and watch what happens to accuracy — if it falls below eighty-five, the extra attempts are costing more than they earn.
The decision rule for a marginal question is worth committing to memory: attempt when you can eliminate at least two options and have a positive reason for one of the remaining two. Speed as a Prerequisite, Not a Goal
Seventy-five attempts in one hundred and eighty minutes is about two minutes twenty per question, and that budget includes reading, deciding, solving, entering and checking. At the 250 level, a meaningful share of questions have to resolve in well under a minute so that the difficult ones can have four.
That speed comes from recognition rather than from rushing. A candidate who has seen a template a hundred times identifies it instantly and executes a known sequence; a candidate meeting it fresh derives it. Nothing else produces this — not reading, not video lectures, not understanding the theory more deeply. It comes from volume of past questions, which is the argument for making previous year papers a continuous part of preparation rather than a final-month activity.
The Mock Regime for the Top Band
At this level, more mocks are not the answer — deeper review is. Two full-length papers a week with three hours of review each will move a 210 to a 250 faster than four papers a week with a glance at the score.
Review every question you got wrong, every question you guessed and got right, and every correct answer that took more than four minutes. That third category is invisible to most candidates and is where the top band is actually built: a correct answer consuming five minutes has taken time from two other questions, and fixing it usually means recalling a standard result rather than re-deriving it.
Attempt on a real interface at your expected shift time, with rough work on loose sheets, so that nothing about exam day is unfamiliar. The Last Thirty Days
Nothing new. A candidate at 230 in the final month does not reach 250 by opening an untouched chapter — they reach it by removing the errors that are already costing them twenty marks a paper, which is a faster and far more reliable route.
Spend the month on your error log, on formula and reaction revision, and on one weekly full-length paper reviewed exhaustively. A Note on What 250 Buys
It is worth being clear-eyed about the destination. A score in this band typically corresponds to a high percentile and opens competitive branches at good institutes, though exactly which depends on category, home state and the cycle — the mapping is discussed in marks versus percentile and the seat implications in the cutoff guide.
It is also worth saying that 250 is not the only good outcome, and that a candidate who lands at 210 having genuinely done the work has not failed at anything. The value of the target is that it forces attention onto accuracy and execution — the two things that improve scores at every level, including the ones well below it.
