Why Ninety Days Is Genuinely Enough
SSC MTS is pitched at matriculation level throughout, which means the concepts are ones you met at school rather than new material requiring construction from scratch. The examinable surface is narrow — a handful of arithmetic topics, a stable set of reasoning families, a bounded band of General Awareness, and a short list of English item types. Three months of consistent work covers that comfortably with room left for practice.
What ninety days does not allow is drift. A candidate who spends the first month deciding what to study, the second collecting materials, and the third panicking has not had three months of preparation; they have had three weeks of it spread thin. The plan below is therefore specific about sequence, and the sequence matters more than the hours because ordering determines whether early work compounds or is wasted.
The organising principle is that different sections repay effort on different timescales. General Awareness depends on elapsed calendar time for spaced repetition, so it must start on day one regardless of anything else. Reasoning repays volume quickly, so it produces early confidence. Arithmetic speed builds over weeks of drilling. English memorisation blocks convert almost immediately. Sequencing around those properties is what makes ninety days sufficient.
Month One: Build the Base
Start with a diagnostic. Attempt one past shift in the first week, before you feel remotely ready, and attempt it properly — full ninety minutes, both sessions. It will go badly, which is the point. Its purpose is calibration: showing you the real difficulty level, the genuine topic frequency, and where your existing gaps sit, before you commit two months of effort in the wrong proportions.
Then build. Reasoning first, working through the families one at a time in blocked practice — analogies, classification, coding-decoding, series, blood relations, direction sense, and the non-verbal types. This section produces visible returns fastest, which matters practically as well as psychologically, since a candidate who sees progress in the first fortnight keeps going.
Alongside it, begin General Awareness immediately and never stop. Twenty to thirty minutes daily of retrieval practice, not reading, covering polity, modern history and Class 6 to 10 science first since those carry the most weight. Also begin the English memorisation blocks — idioms, one word substitution, spelling — which need no conceptual foundation and convert directly into marks. Month Two: Convert Knowledge Into Speed
The second month shifts from acquisition to conversion. Arithmetic becomes the main focus, worked by frequency rather than by textbook chapter: percentage and its applications first, then profit-loss with discount, ratio and proportion, average, interest, and time-work and time-speed-distance. Simplification and number systems should be drilled for raw speed throughout, since they are the fastest marks in the section.
This is also the month to build the calculation base that underpins everything — tables to twenty, squares to thirty, common fraction-to-percentage conversions. It is dull, it takes about a fortnight of background effort, and it saves several seconds per question across the whole paper. - General Awareness retrieval continuing daily, now with spaced revision of month-one material.
- English moving from memorisation blocks to the four core grammar rules, one per week.
- One full-length paper per fortnight, reviewed properly, to track whether speed is actually building.
Introduce full-length papers in this month rather than saving them. A paper every fortnight tells you whether the speed work is landing, and gives you two data points before the final month where the practice load increases. Track attempts and accuracy per session separately rather than totals, since those four numbers diagnose what a total conceals.
Month Three: Practise and Repair
The final month is the loop: two full papers per week, each followed by a full review, with the days between spent repairing whatever the review exposed. Stop adding new material almost entirely — anything learned now is fragile and unrehearsed, and the hours come out of consolidating what is already solid.
Review is where this month earns its value. Classify every mistake as a knowledge gap, a speed failure, or a decision failure, because each demands a different response and treating them together as revision is why candidates plateau. Taper in the final week. Attempt one paper early in the week, then move to short revision sessions on high-frequency material. Do not attempt a paper the day before — the result will either frighten you or make you complacent, and neither is useful with hours to go. Settle logistics early rather than on the final evening.
What to Do When the Plan Slips
Every ninety-day plan slips somewhere, usually around week five or six when the initial momentum has gone and the exam still feels distant. The failure that matters is not the missed days themselves but the response to them: candidates who fall behind often restart the plan from the beginning, which discards the work already done, or abandon it entirely on the grounds that it is now unachievable.
The correct response is to cut scope rather than to restart or abandon. Drop the lowest-frequency topics first — advanced mensuration, elaborate data interpretation, any reasoning family that barely appears — and preserve the high-frequency core plus the practice papers. A plan delivered at eighty per cent scope on schedule beats a complete plan abandoned in week seven, and the topics you cut were the ones contributing least anyway.
What should never be cut is General Awareness daily contact and the full-length papers. The first because retention decays and cannot be rebuilt cheaply, the second because it is the only activity that measures whether the rest is working. When a week goes badly, drop reading and keep those two, and the plan survives the disruption rather than being ended by it.
The Weekly Rhythm That Holds It Together
Within each month, the individual week benefits from a fixed shape rather than being improvised. Six working days and one rest day, with the rest day planned rather than taken by collapse. General Awareness every single day without exception, since it is the one section where a missed day genuinely costs retention rather than just coverage.
Four to five focused hours daily is a reasonable target for a full-time aspirant, and it beats eight scattered hours comfortably. The syllabus does not contain eight hours a day of material, and the marginal hours in a long session produce very little. Finally, protect the practice papers above everything else. When a week goes badly and something has to be dropped, drop reading rather than the paper, because the paper is the only activity that measures whether any of the rest is working.
