The Pattern in One Place
JEE Main Paper 1, taken by B.E. and B.Tech aspirants, is a computer-based test of three hours. It carries 90 questions across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — thirty per subject — of which you attempt 75, for a maximum of 300 marks. Each subject is split into two sections, and the split is where most of the strategy lives.
- Conducting body: National Testing Agency, in computer-based mode across multiple days and two daily shifts.
- Section A, per subject: 20 multiple-choice questions, all compulsory, four marks each.
- Section B, per subject: 10 numerical-value questions, of which any 5 are to be attempted, four marks each.
- Total attempted: 75 questions — 60 from Section A and 15 from Section B.
- Maximum marks: 300, distributed equally as 100 per subject.
- Duration: 3 hours, extended to 4 hours for eligible PwD candidates.
- Languages: offered in thirteen languages including English, Hindi and several regional languages.

The Marking Scheme, and the Detail People Get Wrong
Every correct answer is worth four marks. Every incorrect answer in Section A costs one mark. Unattempted questions cost nothing. So far, so familiar. The detail that changes decisions is that Section B now carries negative marking too — in earlier cycles the numerical section was penalty-free, and a substantial number of candidates still prepare with the old rule in their heads.
Assume negative marking applies to both sections unless the bulletin for your cycle says otherwise, and verify it in the bulletin rather than from memory or a coaching handout. The difference is not academic: under a penalty-free Section B, the correct play is to attempt all five slots regardless of confidence. Under a penalised one, a genuinely blind guess at a numerical answer is close to pure loss, because unlike a four-option MCQ there is no one-in-four rescue.
What 'Attempt Any 5 of 10' Actually Buys You
The optional structure of Section B is the single most under-used feature of the paper. You are given ten numerical questions per subject and need only five. That is a built-in escape from the hardest material in the subject — you can discard the five that look worst and still collect full marks for the section.
Using it well requires a habit most candidates never build: reading all ten before solving any. Thirty seconds of triage across ten questions routinely finds two or three that are noticeably more tractable than the rest. Candidates who instead start at question one and solve until they have five answers regularly spend eleven minutes on a question they should never have opened. Why 300 Marks Divided Equally Is a Strategy Instruction
Each subject carries exactly 100 marks. That symmetry means a mark of Chemistry is worth precisely as much as a mark of Mathematics, which sounds obvious and is routinely ignored. Aspirants pour disproportionate hours into the subject they find most intellectually satisfying — usually Mathematics or Physics — and treat Chemistry as something to be topped up later.
The arithmetic does not support that. Chemistry is generally the fastest subject to answer and the most reliably scoring, particularly its Inorganic half, which stays close to NCERT. A candidate who converts Chemistry into a near-certain 85 to 90 has bought themselves the freedom to be merely competent in one of the other two. A candidate who leaves Chemistry at 55 needs to be excellent in both. The second path is much harder and much more common.
The Clock: One Timer, Three Subjects
There is no per-section timer in JEE Main. All three hours are yours to allocate across all three subjects, and you may move between them freely. This is genuine freedom and it is also the mechanism by which most papers are lost — a candidate who sinks fifty minutes into Mathematics before opening Chemistry has already capped their score, whatever they know.
The standard defence is a pre-committed time budget decided before you enter the hall and rehearsed in mocks: a fixed allocation per subject, a fixed order, and a hard rule for abandoning a question. The Interface Is Part of the Pattern
Because the exam is computer-based, the screen itself is part of what you are being tested on. The question palette colour-codes every question as answered, not answered, marked for review, or answered and marked for review. There is an on-screen numerical keypad for Section B. Rough work happens on the sheets provided, not on the screen, so the transfer between paper and interface is a real source of errors.
The most expensive interface mistake is the marked-for-review trap. A question marked for review and answered is counted; a question marked for review without an answer entered is not. Candidates lose marks every cycle to questions they solved on rough paper and never entered. The fix is mechanical: enter an answer before marking anything for review, and reserve the last five minutes for a palette sweep rather than a final attempt. Two Sessions, One Score
The pattern is identical across both sessions, but the scoring across them is not additive. If you appear in both January and April, your final NTA score is the better of the two, not an average and not a sum. That single rule makes Session 1 a low-risk attempt: the worst realistic outcome is a percentile that gets discarded, and the best is a score you no longer have to chase in April.
It also explains why raw marks are not what appears on your scorecard. Because different shifts see different papers, your marks are converted into a percentile within your own shift before any comparison happens. Turning the Pattern Into a Plan
Reduce the whole structure to four commitments and rehearse them until they are boring. Decide your subject order and time budget in advance. Read all ten Section B questions before solving any of them. Never guess blindly in Section B, and guess in Section A only when you have eliminated at least two options. Reserve the final five minutes for a palette sweep and enter nothing new during it.
None of those four is knowledge. All four are habits, which means they are built by repetition under a clock and nowhere else. Every full-length paper you sit is a rehearsal of the pattern as much as of the syllabus, and the previous year question papers are the most faithful rehearsal available.
