JEE Main Time Management: Where the Three Hours Actually Go

One timer, three subjects, ninety questions and complete freedom to move between them. That freedom is the most common way the paper is lost.

The Structural Problem

JEE Main has no per-section timer. All three hours are yours to spend across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in whatever order and proportion you like. This sounds like an advantage and functions, for most candidates, as a trap.

A locked-section exam protects you from yourself: when the section ends, you move on whether you wanted to or not. JEE Main offers no such protection. A candidate who sinks fifty-five minutes into Mathematics before opening Chemistry has capped their score before answering a single Chemistry question, and nothing in the interface will warn them.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. Seventy-five attempted questions in one hundred and eighty minutes gives an average of about two minutes and twenty seconds per question, including reading, deciding, solving, entering and checking. Any question that consumes six minutes has borrowed from roughly two and a half others.

Fix the Budget Before You Enter the Hall

The defence is a time budget decided in advance and rehearsed in every mock, so that on exam day you are executing a plan rather than making decisions under adrenaline. A budget invented in the hall is not a budget.

  • Chemistry: 40 to 45 minutes. It is the fastest subject to answer, particularly its Inorganic half, and stretching it wastes time that other subjects need.
  • Physics: 55 to 60 minutes, reflecting a heavier computational load per question than Chemistry.
  • Mathematics: 60 to 65 minutes, since it contains the longest questions in the paper.
  • Reserve: 10 to 15 minutes at the end for a palette sweep and for questions deliberately deferred.

Adjust the split to your own profile — a candidate who is genuinely fast in Mathematics and slow in Physics should reverse the emphasis. What must not change is that a budget exists, that it includes a reserve, and that you rehearse the same one repeatedly rather than experimenting with a new arrangement each mock.

Which Subject to Attempt First

This is a real question with two defensible answers, and the wrong move is to have no fixed answer at all.

The case for starting with Chemistry is strong for most candidates. It is the fastest subject, so it banks marks quickly and cheaply. It settles nerves in the first twenty minutes, when adrenaline is highest and complex reasoning is least reliable. And it leaves the two heavier subjects to be attempted with a good score already secured, which measurably improves decision-making.

The case for starting with your strongest subject, whatever it is, rests on protecting it. If Mathematics is your best subject and you leave it until the final hour, a bad Physics section can spill over and consume the time your best subject needed. Starting there guarantees the subject with your highest expected return gets your freshest attention.

Both work. What does not work is deciding on the day, or changing the order between mocks. Pick one, run it for four consecutive full-length papers, compare the results, and then stop reconsidering it.

The Two-Pass Method

Within each subject, attempt in two passes rather than one. The first pass takes every question you can see a route to within about twenty seconds of reading it. Anything that does not resolve that quickly gets skipped immediately — not attempted briefly, not half-started, skipped.

The second pass returns to the skipped questions with the easy marks already banked and a clearer sense of how much time remains. Many of them look different on second reading, because the first pass has warmed you up and because you now know exactly what you can afford.

This method exists to prevent the single most expensive pattern in the exam: encountering a hard question early, refusing to abandon it because you have already invested four minutes, and emerging nine minutes later having answered nothing. The sunk cost is the trap, and a two-pass structure removes the opportunity to fall into it.

The Abandonment Rule

Decide in advance the maximum time any single question gets, and enforce it mechanically. Three minutes for a Section A question, four for Section B. When the limit is reached, leave — regardless of how close you feel, and especially when you feel close, because that feeling is what the trap is made of.

Enforcing this requires knowing what three minutes feels like without a stopwatch, which is a skill built only by timed practice. It is also why the on-screen timer should be glanced at at fixed checkpoints — after each subject, and at the halfway mark — rather than watched continuously, which is corrosive to concentration.

In Section B the rule is easier to apply, because the section is explicitly optional: you need five of ten, so abandoning a stubborn numerical costs nothing at all provided you have alternatives. The triage habit that makes those alternatives available is described in the Section B guide.

The Last Ten Minutes

The final ten minutes should be spent on a palette sweep, not on one more attempt. What you are checking is mechanical: that every question you intended to answer has an answer actually recorded, that no question sits in the marked-for-review state without an entry, and that all five Section B slots are used in each subject.

The marked-for-review trap costs candidates marks every single cycle. A question marked for review without an entered answer is not counted, however correctly you solved it on rough paper. Starting a fresh hard question in the final ten minutes is almost always a mistake. It will not be finished, and it displaces the sweep that would have recovered four marks you had already earned.

Recovering From a Bad Section

At some point in most real attempts, one subject goes wrong. The paper is harder than expected, or a familiar chapter has been asked unfamiliarly, and the section that was budgeted at fifty minutes is at sixty-five with questions remaining.

The correct response is to stop, on budget, and move to the next subject. This is counterintuitive and it is right: the marks remaining in a bad section are the hardest on the paper, while the marks waiting in the untouched subject are ordinary ones. Trading twenty minutes of hard marks for twenty minutes of easy ones is the single best decision available mid-paper, and almost nobody makes it, because the emotional pull of finishing what you started is very strong.

The other half of recovery is psychological. A section that felt brutal almost certainly felt brutal to everyone in the room, and percentile scoring absorbs that — a point worth internalising in advance rather than reasoning about mid-exam, as explained in the normalisation guide.

Building the Habits

None of this is knowledge and all of it is habit, which means it is built by repetition under a clock and in no other way. Reading this article changes nothing; running the same budget through six consecutive full-length papers changes a great deal.
