The Structural Fact About Mathematics
Mathematics carries one hundred marks, the same as Chemistry. It takes most candidates two or three times as long to prepare to the same standard. That is not a complaint about fairness; it is the constraint that should shape every decision about the subject.
Two consequences follow. First, chapters that are cheap to secure deserve disproportionate early attention, because they convert hours into marks at a much better rate. Second, the expensive chapters cannot be compressed — Calculus does not respond to a fortnight of intensity — so they have to start early or not at all.
The Four Blocks
It is more useful to think in four blocks than in fifteen chapters, because that is how the marks cluster and how the study cost varies.
- Calculus: Limits, Continuity and Differentiability, Applications of Derivatives, Indefinite and Definite Integration, Area under Curves, Differential Equations. The single heaviest block in the paper.
- Coordinate Geometry: Straight Lines, Circles, Parabola, Ellipse, Hyperbola, plus Three Dimensional Geometry and Vectors. Second heaviest, and highly formulaic once learned.
- Algebra: Complex Numbers, Quadratic Equations, Sequences and Series, Permutations and Combinations, Binomial Theorem, Matrices and Determinants, Sets Relations and Functions. Broad, and containing the cheapest chapters in the subject.
- Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability: smaller in total but consistently present and generally quick to answer.
Calculus and Coordinate Geometry together typically account for close to half the Mathematics paper. Neither is optional and neither is fast, which is why a Mathematics plan that leaves both to the final third fails predictably.
The Cheap Chapters
Ranked by marks per hour rather than by raw question count, a clear group sits at the top. These are the chapters a candidate short on time should secure completely before touching anything harder.
- Matrices and Determinants: bounded content, mechanical questions, reliably present.
- Vectors and Three Dimensional Geometry: highly formulaic, and among the most common sources of clean Section B numerical questions.
- Statistics: small, formula-driven, almost always present, and frequently the fastest question in the paper.
- Sets, Relations and Functions: conceptually light and dependable.
- Binomial Theorem: a small set of standard question types that repeat.
- Complex Numbers: bounded, with recognisable templates once you have seen enough of them.
Together these can constitute a substantial share of the paper at a fraction of the study cost of Calculus. A candidate who owns them completely has secured a floor in Mathematics, which changes what the rest of the subject has to deliver.
The Expensive Chapters
Calculus is the obvious case. It is the heaviest block, it appears throughout the paper including inside other chapters' questions, and it is the one area where sustained problem practice over months genuinely cannot be substituted. Application of Derivatives and Definite Integration in particular reward volume in a way nothing else in the subject does.
Conic sections within Coordinate Geometry are the second case: parabola, ellipse and hyperbola carry a large formula load and a large question surface, and they take time to become automatic. Permutations, Combinations and Probability are the third — deceptively small in content and unusually punishing of shaky understanding, since a subtly wrong reading of a counting problem produces a confidently wrong answer.

Why Mathematics Costs Time in the Exam Too
Weightage tables report marks and ignore duration, which understates the real cost of Mathematics twice over — once in preparation and once in the hall. Mathematics questions are on average the longest on the paper, and Calculus questions in particular can consume five minutes without any error being made.
This is why the standard time budget allocates Mathematics the largest block and why it is usually attempted after Chemistry: the subject needs the most time and benefits from being approached with marks already banked. There is a second implication that follows from Mathematics being slow. Because its questions take the longest, it is also the subject where a poor time budget does the most damage — running over in Mathematics means the overrun is measured in whole questions rather than in seconds. A candidate who habitually finishes the paper with Mathematics half-attempted usually does not have a Mathematics problem at all; they have a budget problem that Mathematics happens to expose, because it is the section left holding the shortfall.
Class 11 Versus Class 12
The split is roughly even and lands cleanly along the block boundaries. Class 11 carries almost all of Algebra, Trigonometry, Straight Lines, Circles and Conic Sections. Class 12 carries almost all of Calculus, plus Matrices and Determinants, Vectors, Three Dimensional Geometry and Probability.
The recurring problem for Class 12 students is that the cheap chapters are disproportionately in Class 11 and feel like old material. Algebra and Coordinate Geometry are not revision — they are half the paper and among the best-value marks available. A Class 12 student who has not revisited Sequences and Series or Conic Sections since Class 11 is carrying an invisible gap into the exam.
One consequence for Class 12 students is worth acting on early. The cheap chapters sitting in Class 11 are exactly the ones that feel least urgent, because they were covered a year ago and nothing in the current syllabus depends on them. That combination — high value, low felt urgency — is precisely how good marks get left on the table. Using Weightage in a Revision Rotation
Weightage is an average across many shift papers and not a forecast for yours; a chapter averaging one question can appear twice. Its right use is sequencing, and in Mathematics its most valuable use is deciding what gets touched most often in revision.
Weight the rotation by two factors together: how many marks the chapter typically carries, and how fast you personally lose it. Calculus needs frequent contact because it carries weight and because it degrades quickly without practice. Statistics needs infrequent contact because it is small and sticky. A rotation built on published weightage alone will diligently revise the chapters you already know.

Build Your Own Table
Take eight to ten recent shift papers, tag every Mathematics question by chapter, and count. The table you produce will be calibrated to the current pattern rather than to a decade-long average, and the tagging teaches you the recurring templates as a side effect.
In Mathematics that side effect is the more valuable half.
