The Status of the 2027 Syllabus
NTA has not published the JEE Main 2027 syllabus at the time of writing. It arrives with the information bulletin, expected around late October or early November 2026 — see the exam date and notification guide for the full expected calendar. Until then, the working assumption is that the syllabus continues in the form it has held since the 2024 reduction, because that is what has happened in every cycle since.
This is one of the safest assumptions in the entire exam. Syllabus revisions are announced, not sprung, and they arrive with the bulletin months before the paper. Waiting for confirmation before starting Rotational Motion is not caution; it is a way of losing October.
What Was Deleted in the 2024 Reduction
The last substantial change came in the 2024 cycle, when NTA aligned the JEE Main syllabus more closely with the rationalised NCERT curriculum. Several complete chapters and a number of sub-topics were removed. Those removals have held in the cycles since, and they are the reason older question banks contain questions you no longer need to solve.
- Physics: Communication Systems was removed entirely, along with some sub-topics elsewhere including parts of the vectors material historically bundled into Kinematics.
- Chemistry: Environmental Chemistry, Polymers, Chemistry in Everyday Life and the States of Matter chapter were removed, along with Surface Chemistry and the Hydrogen chapter in the rationalised alignment.
- Mathematics: Mathematical Reasoning was removed, as were Mathematical Induction and parts of the Three Dimensional Geometry treatment.
Two cautions on that list. First, the exact boundary of a partial deletion is often blurry — a chapter can be retained while specific sub-topics inside it go — so the bulletin's own topic list is the only authority. Second, the fact that a topic is deleted from JEE Main does not mean it is deleted from JEE Advanced or from your board syllabus. Physics: The Full Syllabus, and Where the Marks Sit
Physics in JEE Main is drawn from the full Class 11 and Class 12 course. The Class 11 half covers Units and Measurements, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work Energy and Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Properties of Solids and Liquids, Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory of Gases, and Oscillations and Waves. The Class 12 half covers Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics, Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation, Atoms and Nuclei, and Electronic Devices. There is also an Experimental Skills section, which is genuinely tested and genuinely under-prepared.
Against past papers, the distribution is uneven in a stable way. Electrodynamics as a block — Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetism, EMI and AC — is consistently the heaviest region of the paper. Modern Physics, comprising Dual Nature, Atoms and Nuclei and Electronic Devices, delivers a disproportionate number of marks for the study time it costs, which makes it the single best return in the subject for a candidate short on time. Chemistry: Three Subjects Wearing One Name
Chemistry is the subject where the syllabus document is most misleading, because it presents Physical, Organic and Inorganic as one list when they demand three entirely different kinds of work. Physical Chemistry covers Some Basic Concepts, Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, Chemical Thermodynamics, Solutions, Equilibrium, Redox and Electrochemistry, and Chemical Kinetics — all of it numerical and closer in character to Physics than to the rest of Chemistry. Inorganic covers Classification and Periodicity, the p-block, d- and f-block elements, and Coordination Compounds — largely retention work. Organic covers Purification and Characterisation, Basic Principles, Hydrocarbons, and the functional-group chapters through Biomolecules.
The practical consequence is that Chemistry rewards a split routine rather than a uniform one. Physical Chemistry needs problem practice; Inorganic needs spaced repetition against NCERT; Organic needs mechanism understanding followed by heavy reaction-sequence drilling. Treating all three the same way is the most common reason strong students underperform in what should be their highest-scoring subject. One syllabus fact worth stating plainly: Inorganic Chemistry in JEE Main stays remarkably close to NCERT, to the point that a candidate who has genuinely internalised the NCERT text can answer most Inorganic questions directly. Mathematics: Broad, Shallow in Places, Deep in Others
The Mathematics syllabus covers Sets Relations and Functions, Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations, Matrices and Determinants, Permutations and Combinations, Binomial Theorem, Sequences and Series, Limits Continuity and Differentiability, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Coordinate Geometry, Three Dimensional Geometry, Vector Algebra, Statistics and Probability, and Trigonometry.
Calculus and Coordinate Geometry together dominate the paper, and neither can be compressed — they need sustained problem practice over months rather than revision. Against that, Matrices and Determinants, Vectors and 3D Geometry, Statistics, and Sets and Relations are comparatively contained: fewer question types, more formula-driven, and reliably worth their study time. How to Read a Syllabus Without Being Trapped By It
Official syllabi are written defensively. They list everything the examiner might reasonably want to ask, which protects the examining body from challenge and tells a candidate almost nothing about where to spend December. The correction is not to ignore the syllabus but to read it alongside past papers, which are the only record of what was actually asked.
The practical method: take the official topic list as your coverage checklist, so that nothing is a surprise on the day, but let past-paper frequency decide depth. A topic that appears in every paper deserves problem practice until it is automatic. A topic that appears once every three cycles deserves enough familiarity to attempt a straightforward question and no more. Working through previous year question papers properly is what converts the syllabus from a list into a plan.
The Part of the Syllabus Nobody Studies
Experimental Skills in Physics is on the syllabus, appears in papers, and is skipped by a large share of candidates because it feels peripheral. It covers vernier callipers, screw gauge, simple pendulum, metre bridge, potentiometer, Ohm's law experiments, resistivity, focal length determination, and characteristic curves of diodes and transistors. It is finite, it is directly from NCERT lab work, and it is among the cheapest marks in the subject.
The same logic applies to Chemistry's Purification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds and to Principles Related to Practical Chemistry. These are small, bounded and regularly tested. Skipping them is a choice to leave easy marks on the table while grinding at hard ones elsewhere.
Turning the Syllabus Into a Schedule
A syllabus becomes useful the moment it has dates attached. Split the topic list into a first pass, where every chapter is seen once with problems attempted, and a second pass built entirely from your own error log. Aim to complete the first pass with at least eight weeks left before your target session, because the second pass is where scores actually move.
Then test the coverage rather than trusting it. Chapter completion is a feeling; a timed full-length paper is evidence.
